Exemplar Schemes & Units of Work

 Back
These Schemes (Primary) and Units (KS3) of Work are exemplars and have been developed by practising teachers.

To meet the requirements of the 2007 Syllabus, the extent to which each religious tradition is taught will differ from school to school, reflecting the faith background composition of pupils. Initially two exemplar schemes of work (primary) have been prepared; one for schools where the majority of pupils are Christian and one where the majority of pupils are Muslim.

The intention is to also prepare a scheme of work for schools where pupils are drawn equally from a number of religious traditions, but it is unlikely that this scheme will be ready before September. Many of the units for the schools with no majority religious tradition will be drawn from the two schemes already finished. It will therefore be possible to teach religious education from September using a fusion of the two schemes of work already prepared, and adapt it later.

The schemes of work for Y1-Y6 have been developed reflecting a spiral curriculum. Therefore the intention is that year group material is not seen in isolation.

The exemplars are the initial versions, with revisions due in the future. These revisions will incorporate links and references to the DVD films, and other relevant resources.
Please check this web site for details of updated exemplars.

It is our intention to produce the Exemplar 3 Schemes of Work in a similar format to the other models. This will not be possible for some months.
In the meantime, click here for term & year guidance grids for all years, using Exemplars 1 & 2 (MC-mainly Christian, MM-mainly Muslim).

The Curriculum Group has written a short document about 'How to use the Primary exemplar material', available here.
In addition, the schemes of work have been made copiable to enable them to be inserted into school curriculum documents.

Many schools are beginning to consider the method of assessment for Religious Education. The following document will give you some possible starting points.

This model, we suggest, can be used in a school with four Religious Traditions equally represented. Many of the existing exemplar lessons can be used. Some new lessons will need to be written.
